a holiday crafternoon

decorated air mail envelopes

wrenay invited several ladies to her place for a fun holiday crafternoon with a grand assortment of supplies, including a little xyron machine which i haven't used before. i had forgotten to bring my camera, but we had a great time and made a big mess on the table!

decorated air mail envelopes

i made a few gift tags, but my favorite things i made were these decorated airmail envelopes embellished with various scrap papers, fabrics and glued on gift tags which are from a freebie by emily of the black apple. now it's time to figure out what to put inside the envelopes....

the sketchbook project

i just signed up for the sketchbook project - a large scale art project where organizers send out 3000 sketchbooks, one for each person who signs up to draw, paint, collage, write, etc. it's all up to you on how to fill the pages. so far over 2000 people have signed up!
& by feb 15th 2009, you will send it back to them so they can showcase all the sketchbooks in a multicity tour!

1. a wooden butterfly from peru

3. dull scissors i never use anymore
4. blue & white baker's twine
5. artist's tape
6. embroidery floss & assorted ribbons
7. a bowl from anthropologie, it brings to mind jelly molds and eating ice cream in an old fashioned ice cream parlor.

wishlist

every year i always have things i would love for gifts but i never seem to remember them when people ask me!

rosette fasinator headband, $30 by giantdwarf
this pretty headband comes in several different color choices. so cute! i've been torn between the saffron butter and the violet grape.

Drawing From Life: The Journal as Art by jennifer new, $25 amazon.com
this is a great book about visual journaling. i like this book particularly because it doesnt just feature mixed media collage like a lot of the other art journaling books do. and it's not an instruction/technique book either. it's simply inspiration and there's great in depth interviews with each person. i also like that it doesn't focus just on artists. i've been borrowing this out of the library, but it's definitely worth getting my own copy.

papercut print, $25 by elsita
an absolutely gorgeous print of a paper cut. it's amazing to see all the intricate details inside the silhouette of a girl.

Airmail Label Note Card Set, $8.50 by BlueCakeAndButtercup
because i can't seem to resist airmail themed things!

neutral things

i liked gathering and arranging these objects, they are tucked onto an old book - i folded its pages so its pages would expand and become a sculpture. it might be fun to actually glue down all the items, but i dont know yet.

inspiration pinned up

inspiration pinned up

i love pinning things up, it's so easy to change around if i feel like it too.
i feel like each paper i find has a story.

1. the girl with balloons is a dior ad, and it's clearly inspired by the film the red balloon.
2. 'a room of my own' is one of my favorite things about teen vogue. i think they stopped doing that page though. this page is about two sisters who share a colorful room.
3. an old envelope and postage, bought at the vintage paper fair.

gift wrapping

wrapping gifts can seem like a chore to many. but i'm not a girl who likes the santa snowman papers really - they're okay, but they can be rather cheesy and generic, you know?

all the crafting blogs i've been reading lately have tons of lovely holiday ideas and one idea reminded me of what i had in abundance.

the letters she made are hand cut, but i was lucky enough to get tons of white diecut letters, so i had a much easier time personalizing the gift wrap. i used a map, wrapped a dictionary page as a band, added a C diecut letter and topped it off with a key, and blue & white twine. i love adding a personal touch to the wrapping, it makes presenting the gift lovelier.
